The CDC Import Permit Program (IPP) will soon be launching a new electronic permitting system, BioPermit, for those wishing to obtain permits in order to import infectious biological materials that could cause disease in humans.  BioPermit will replace the current system, eIPP, as the centralized location for obtaining import permits and sharing information with IPP. The new system will make it easier for users to apply for and receive import permits, as it is more agile, user-friendly, and intuitive.

BioPermit will be activated and mandatory for use on January 20, 2026. I’m sharing some additional information below about the transition, including exciting features of BioPermit and information sessions coming soon.  Please feel free to share this information with your stakeholders, if helpful, and please let me know if you have any questions or we can help further.

Compared to eIPP, benefits of BioPermit include:

  • A more intuitive user interface. Applications, permits, and inspections will be clearly organized and accessible from dedicated menus on the permittee’s homepage.
  • An immediate notification system. Email notifications will be sent to permittees as soon as IPP requests additional information for an application, issues a permit, or issues inspection communications. Notifications will include hyperlinks and instructions if permittee actions are needed.
  • Improved live communication. Permittees and IPP reviewers can use real-time messaging to communicate about applications for import permits.
  • A faster processing time for permits. The enhanced notification and communications, along with a more logically designed (and OMB-approved) application will increase the efficiency of permit processing.

To assist users with the transition from eIPP to BioPermit, IPP will host three informational webinars using Microsoft Teams. The same information will be presented in all webinars.
