Basic Disinfection

An on-demand distance learning opportunity

Basic Disinfection is an on-demand virtual training introducing the essential elements of disinfection for laboratory and research environments. Basic Disinfection is comprised of four modules: Chemical Disinfection, Physical Disinfection, Hand Hygiene, and Volume Disinfection. Chemical Disinfection covers basic terminology, the pros and cons of various chemical agents used for disinfection and sterilization, modes of action, hierarchy of resistance, and much more. The Physical Disinfection module explores physical methods used for disinfection with a focus on heat—including dry heat, steam sterilization and incineration as well as radiation and filtration. The Hand Hygiene Module focuses on how handwashing and antisepsis play a role in infection transmission, and discusses best practices for handwashing, use of alcohol-based sanitizers, and other important considerations for appropriate hand hygiene. The Basic Disinfection course finishes with the Volume Disinfection module, which focuses on space, area, or room decontamination. In addition to introducing terminology associated with volume disinfection, this module provides basic information about the most common technologies and agents used for area decontamination, discusses the pros and cons of disinfectants often used for this purpose and outlines considerations for choosing the best method for your needs.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • List the different types of chemical and physical disinfectants
  • Outline the respective pros and cons for various disinfectants
  • Explain why and when disinfection is appropriate
  • Discuss microbial susceptibility and resistance to disinfection
  • Differentiate between decontamination, sanitization, disinfection, and sterilization
  • Identify the various factors which affect the disinfection process and explain how each factor enhances or interferes with the process
  • Explain how to research the appropriate method or product for a given application
  • Describe the risks and benefits of volume/area decontamination versus surface disinfection, and the strategies useful for selecting an appropriate method
  • Identify and explain the various systems and cycles used for sterilization processes
  • Discuss the importance of and methods for achieving hand disinfection

WHO SHOULD ENROLL

This course is designed for people entering the profession and those with up to three years of experience in biosafety or infection control. It is also suitable for people who will benefit from additional knowledge regarding the types of disinfectants/decontamination systems and how to choose appropriate products/methods for their workplace or who may need refresher training.
