Are you nearing the end of your 5-year credentialing cycle or just starting your journey?
Either way, here's a quick guide to earning the Credentialing Maintenance (CM) points needed to maintain your ABSA credential (RBP or CBSP).
To re-credential, you need 40 CM points over 5 years — that's roughly 320 hours of biosafety/biosecurity service or education (1 CM point = 8 hours). While this sounds like a lot, it ensures the high standards of your credential.
Good news: Many free or low-cost options are available through ABSA and beyond.
How to Earn CM Points
ABSA breaks down the 40 points into categories to encourage balanced learning and community involvement:
Service & Membership (up to 25 points total):
- Professional biosafety practice: Max 10 points
- ABSA/ABSA Affiliate membership: Max 10 points
- Service on committees, boards, or as a mentor: No limit (ABSA or related organizations)
Continuing Education (Minimum 15 points / 120 hours):
- ABSA-sponsored events (see Professional Development and ABSA's Annual Conference)
- Approved non-ABSA training (see Credentialing Maintenance Program section)
- ABSA On-Demand modules
- Animal Biosafety videos
- Applied Biosafety: Journal of ABSA International (APB)-based learning
- Publications and presentations (including ABSA International Blog posts! 😉)
