Global incidence of dengue has risen dramatically, with an 8-fold increase in reported cases between 2000 and 2019, growing from roughly 500,000 to over 5 million cases annually. It is spreading to new, temperate regions, including parts of Europe and the United States, due to climate change and increased urbanization.

Global incidence of dengue in 2024 has been the highest on record for this calendar year; the Americas are reporting record-breaking numbers of infections, infections are more common in the US as well.
It is possible for people to be infected through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects (fomites), but the risk is generally considered to be low.
