Andes virus is the only known hantavirus capable of person-to-person transmission, documented in healthcare settings without adequate IPC. Outbreak originated aboard MV Hondius (Ushuaia, Argentina departure). Illness characterized by fever, GI symptoms, and rapid progression to ARDS and shock. Hospital workers caring for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) patients require contact and droplet precautions at minimum; airborne precautions during aerosol-generating procedures.
