11. Large-scale Biosafety

Large-scale Biosafety will review biosafety for work at large-scale, which the NIH rDNA Guidelines defines as >10L. The course will review Appendix K from GLSP to BSL-3 LS, with a focus on primary and secondary containment. It will review basic bioprocessing steps, such as fermentation/cell culture and purification technologies. Examples of classic and newer single use technologies will be provided. Pearls and pitfalls of the various technologies will be discussed, using various scenarios. The course will include a review of risk assessment techniques used for large scale bioprocesses and a discussion of large-scale related to vaccines, viral vectors, and recombinant proteins.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Recognize large scale bioprocessing technologies, the inherent risks and how to perform and document risk assessments
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of single use biotechnology equipment. Plan for issues of waste disposal and emergency response
- Restate the components of the NIH rDNA Guidelines Appendix K and how to implement them for large scale bioprocessing projects

This webinar will be two 2.5-hour sessions on Wednesday, July 19, and July 26, 2023, at 12:30 pm CDT. For the webinar, you should plan on logging in 15 minutes ahead of the start of each session. You are required to attend the webinar session, complete the pre-course and post course assessments, and complete the evaluation in order to receive the completion certificate through the ABSA International Training Site. There is a 15% processing fee for cancellations by 6/21/2023. Cancellations between 6/21/2023 and 6/28/2023 will be refunded at 50% of the course fee. No refunds after 6/28/2023.
