08. Conspiracy Theories, Mis- and Disinformation

Conspiracy Theories, Mis- and Disinformation is a course to help anyone who communicates about biosafety and biosecurity to understand the context of mis- and disinformation around laboratories and how to better respond in the moment. The course includes introductions to concepts, terminology, and the history of conspiracy theory and misleading information. Participants will learn strategies to identify, understand, and respond to conspiracy theories and mis- and disinformation. The course will include practical exercises and break out groups to develop skills in identification of and response to false information around laboratories.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the elements of misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theory
  • Identify basic information distortions and their application to misinformation
  • Recognize risk factors for being pulled into misinformation and conspiracy narratives
  • Determine their target audience for addressing inaccurate information
  • Identify what the audience wants and needs to know to understand corrections
  • Develop appropriate messages that will resonate with the target audience
  • Deliver safety and security messages in an effective manner

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Biosafety professionals in government, industry, academic and other institutions/organizations
  • Anyone who regularly communicates about biosafety with the public or non-biosafety professionals

The webinar will be presented by Anna Muldoon, MPH, Gryphon Scientific, Takoma Park, Maryland.

This course has been approved for 0.25 CM points toward RBP/CBSP recertification. ABSA International is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E.® Program. This webinar will be presented in two 90-minute sessions on Wednesday, June 21, and June 28, 2023, at 2 pm (CDT), led by an expert in both public health response and conspiracy theory in biological spaces. Attendees should plan on logging in 15 minutes ahead of each session and complete the entire webinar session, and access and/or complete all modules in the course on the training site to receive the completion certificate through the ABSA International Training Site. The link in the invitation will be unique to the user and cannot be shared.

ABSA Members $165 USD
Nonmembers $278 USD

To obtain the ABSA member rate, the participant will need to be an ABSA member in the year in which the training is offered. Course fees include: course handouts, access to the ABSA International training site, and three hours of interactive instruction from a well-respected subject matter expert.

To obtain the ABSA member rate, the participant will need to be an ABSA member in the year in which the training is offered. Confirmed, paid participants will be sent detailed information regarding the course within a few days prior to the course. Substitutions allowed with notice by 5/24/2023. There is a 15% processing fee for cancellations prior to 5/31/2023. Cancellations between 5/31/2023 and 6/7/2023 will be refunded at 50 percent of the course fee. No refunds after 6/7/2023.
