DESCRIPTION:ABSA BBTC® Fort Collins\nAugust 4-8\, 2025\nHilton Fort Collins\nFort Collins\, Colorado \nRegistration will open Spring 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA WEEK-LONG COURSE COVERING ANIMAL\, GENERAL\, AND PLANT BIOSAFETY AND BIOSECURITY\n\n\nThe Biosafety and Biosecurity Training Course (BBTC®) is designed for persons who are interested in the varying aspects of the responsibility of biosafety professionals. It is also suitable for persons who supervise biosafety professionals and for those who will benefit from additional knowledge of biosafety as a complement to their primary responsibilities. \nThe week-long training will address preparations for audits and inspections\, BSL-2/BSL-3 building design and operations\, clinical and public health lab biosafety\, prion disease research\, and field investigations. Participants will receive intensive and engaging training on aspects of biosafety and biosecurity\, including interactive exercises and greenhouse tour. All lunches and an offsite dinner on Tuesday will be provided. The BBTC emphasizes the ethics and principles of biosafety and is a perfect follow-up to ABSA’s Principles & Practices of Biosafety Course. The course will review Appendix K from GLSP to BSL-3 LS\, with a focus on primary and secondary containment. It will review basic bioprocessing steps\, such as fermentation/cell culture and purification technologies. Examples of classic and newer single use technologies will be provided. Pearls and pitfalls of the various technologies will be discussed\, using various scenarios. Smith\, Ph.D.\, PMP\, NASA\, Mars Sample Return\, Sample Receiving Project in the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Sciences (ARES) Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center\nDr. Alvin L. Smith is the Project Manager for the Mars Sample Return\, Sample Receiving Project in the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Sciences (ARES) Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston\, Texas. In this capacity\, he leads a multidisciplinary team of NASA research scientists\, engineers\, and astromaterial curation experts in preparing for the Earth-based phase of the Mars Sample Return Campaign (mid to late 2030’s)\, which includes recovery and transportation of retuned Martian samples to a specialized high containment laboratory\, so scientists can conduct detailed analysis\, answering major questions about the history and habitability of Mars. Prior to this role\, Alvin was a Planetary Protection Engineer and Manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, where he provided technical oversight to several research & development projects. His contributions have been instrumental in planning flight implementation for Mars 2020 (Perseverance rover)\, and Europa Clipper. \nAlvin joined the NASA family after spending over 20 years as a researcher in high containment laboratories and as a consultant as a biodefense subject matter expert\, focusing on the development of medical countermeasures and biodetection capabilities for HIV\, poxviruses\, Ebola\, and other potential biological weapons. Alvin’s expertise in chemical\, biological\, radiological\, and nuclear (CBRN) threats has been leveraged by numerous government agencies including Congress\, Department of Defense\, Department of Homeland Security\, Health and Human Services\, and the intelligence community. \nDr. Smith is also a strong advocate for university outreach\, training programs\, and research collaborations. He also has been awarded by the NASA and academic communities for his innovative approaches towards developing collaborative research programs with community colleges\, Minority Serving Institutions\, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. \nHe holds a doctorate in Medical Microbiology from Howard University\, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Talladega College\, and is a Project Management Professional. \nJoey Ramp-Adams\, Founder of Empower Ability Consulting\, Inc.\nJoey Ramp-Adams is a Biocognitive Neuroscientist and founder of the disability access firm Empower Ability Consulting\, Inc. (EAC). EAC is dedicated to advocating and acting as a liaison for disabled students\, professional academics\, and STEM industry professionals\, including biomedical sciences\, focusing on disabled student service dog handlers. In addition\, EAC conducts laboratory risk assessments nationally to determine reasonable and safe accommodations for disability access. \nJoey has been instrumental in enacting changes in the American Society of Microbiology and the American Chemical Society’s laboratory safety guidelines to include inclusive guidelines for service dog handlers and has spoken to the House of Representatives in Washington\, D.C.\, to enact change. She is recognized globally and endorsed by the American Chemical Society for Students with Disabilities\, the American Society for Microbiology\, the National Association of Scientific Materials Managers\, and the ASM Guidelines for Biosafety in Teaching Laboratories. \nJoey is an active member of the Legislative and Advocacy Committee for Assistance Dogs International (ADI) which is recognized internationally as the Gold Standard in service dog training accreditation. She is a published author and public speaker on service dog access to science laboratories and the vice-president and co-founder of the International Alliance for Ability in Science (IAFAIS). The goal is to understand the 2024 United States Government Policy for Oversight of Dual Use Research of Concern and Pathogens with Enhanced Pandemic Potential in advance of the May 6\, 2025 implementation date\, and work together to craft strategies for biosafety and biosecurity professionals to adapt institutional responses in light of continuing government action through\, for example\, the Risky Research Review Act under consideration in Congress. The webinar will be highly interactive\, with a focus on practitioner views of the current policy and future uncertainty\, led by a biosecurity expert with over 15 years’ experience studying\, teaching on\, and crafting policy for biosecurity for a variety of national and international groups.
