SUMMARY:6V. Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 27\, 2023\, 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM CDT\n6V. Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)\nRecent infectious disease outbreaks highlighted the need for the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The guidance on use of appropriate PPE varies greatly and can often be contradicting and therefore confusing to the end user. Furthermore\, availability of different PPE often varies depending on the situation and location. Selection of appropriate PPE should be based on a comprehensive risk assessment that takes in consideration the different hazards present\, as well as the procedures/activities to be conducted. Often times\, locations where PPE is needed vary as well\, from a well-controlled laboratory environment to collection room or a field location\, and even in a patient room setting. Each of these situations require staff to be able to perform a comprehensive risk assessment\, often in a fast-evolving situation and with a minimal understanding of specifications associated with different PPE components available to them. This course will provide overview of different PPE options available; specifications associated with each option\, and address a risk assessment process for selection of appropriate PPE for different environments. The examples will include some of the most common issues and considerations when selecting PPE such as supply chain issues as well as strategies to address behavioral concerns that may arise. In groups\, participants will develop risk assessment for different scenarios\, present their risk assessment to the class\, and evaluate each other’s PPE selection based on their risk assessment. Instructors will guide participants through the process by providing critical feedback on the PPE features and selection process as they progress. The course will go through an effective risk assessment process which is critical for proper selection of appropriate PPE. The course is intended for those who want to be able to lead or aid in the selection of appropriate PPE in order to enhance both biosafety and biosecurity at their institution. \nObjectives: \n\nSummarize the range of issues that must be considered when selecting appropriate PPE\, including human behavior\nDevelop strategies for selecting appropriate PPE based on a comprehensive risk assessment process\nRecognize the value of selection and use of appropriate PPE in promoting behavioral compliance\, biosafety and biosecurity best practices\n\nSuggested Background: None\nTarget Audience: All Safety Professionals\, Animal Caretakers\, Laboratory Workers\nAudience Level: Basic\nCourse Length: 4 hours (one 4-hour live session with a 30-minute break) \nThis webinar will be one 4-hour webinar sessions on Friday\, October 27\, 2023\, 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM (CDT) with a 30-minute break. SUMMARY:FREE MABioN Webinar - Considerations for Working with LCMV - From Bench to Bedside
DESCRIPTION:Webinar summary: \nLymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a single-stranded RNA arenavirus commonly used in laboratory animal models to examine acute and chronic viral infections and immunopathology. However\, there is wide variation in LCMV biosafety practices between institutions\, based on differing interpretations of guidelines and risk data. This lack of consensus can pose a challenge to the biosafety professional who may be evaluating LCMV use at their facility. The first part of this presentation will compare the two most common laboratory strains of LCMV\, demonstrate the variation in biosafety policy between institutions\, and discuss one institution’s recent approach to navigating the use of this virus. \nOutside of the laboratory\, LCMV has also become a promising viral vector with potential use in immunizations and immunotherapy. The second portion of this presentation will examine the applications of LCMV in a clinical setting\, discussing the biosafety practices necessary for the safe handling of LCMV-based human gene therapies\, focusing on the clinical risk assessment associated with recombinant forms of LCMV. Considerations for the safety of clinical subjects\, staff\, and close contacts will be explored.   Presented by Caitlyn Hauke\, PhD\, Clinical Biosafety Services Erik Pietrowicz\, Dartmouth College

SUMMARY:CABS-ACSB Webinar: Why do Biosafety Professionals Move to Other Countries?
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on January 30\, 2024 for the next webinar available to CABS-ACSB Members as part of our webinar series! \nThe topic Why do Biosafety Professionals Move to Other Countries? is presented by Luis Ochoa Carrera\, Office of Environmental Health and Safety at Michigan State University. \nIn some countries\, biosafety professionals are known as biosafety officers\, biosafety responsibles\, biosafety staff\, biosafety managers\, or biosafety designees\, among others. The role and activities of these professionals has been remarkable in preventing accidents from happening\, in responding lab emergencies\, in doing risk assessments\, and in providing guidance expertise to all members of an institution. However\, these professionals have to face and will face different challenges\, that in some cases\, motivate them to leave their countries of origin. Despite having an increase of interest in the biosafety discipline in recent years\, the existing and ongoing efforts in different regions to promote biosafety and biosecurity have remained imbalanced. \nLuis Ochoa Carrera Bio: \nMr. Ochoa currently serves as the High-Containment Lab/Pandemic Safety Manager and Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at Michigan State University. From October 2019 to June 2021\, he worked as the Director of the Epidemiological Surveillance and Research Laboratory Network of the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS) and from March 2013 to October 2019 he served as BSL-3 Lab Coordinator at the National Reference Laboratory in Mexico. Prior to his current position\, he received a Master’s Degree in Public Health Management focused on Biological Risk Management. \nHe is currently the President of the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA-International) and also has served as the Chair of the Publications Committee\, member of the International Engagement Committee\, member of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Working Group\, and international editor for Applied Biosafety Journal. \nAs one of the eighteen founding members and past President of the AMEXBIO\, he has strengthened the network between biosafety professionals in the region and helped to create strategic alliances with international and national institutions. Additionally\, Mr. Ochoa has served as a mentor of different mentoring programs for Sandia National Laboratories\, the Next Generation Global Health Security Network\, and the IFBA Mentorship Program. In addition\, Mr. Ochoa serves as Senior Advisor for PandemicTech\, member of the IFBA Board of Directors\, and is a Certified Biosafety Professional from IFBA in four disciplines: Biorisk Management\, Biological Risk Assessment\, Biocontainment Facility Design\,Operations and & Maintenance\, and Biosafety Cabinet Selection\, Installation and Safe Use. \nThe webinar will be held on January 30\, 2024 at 12:00 CST. \nRegistration is limited so we encourage you to RSVP soon! Please reply to this email (cabsacsb@gmail.com) to confirm your attendance and a Zoom link and meeting invitation will be provided to you. \nPlease submit any questions in advance and there will be an opportunity to ask questions after the session.

The subjects covered are broad\, deep\, and practical\, and the instructors are highly knowledgeable\, engaging\, and funny. \nPPB Attendee\nThis is by far the best offsite training I’ve ever gone as a student and/or professional! So much learning and so much fun at the same time! It’s a very unique and special faculty group! \nPPB Attendee\nI wanted to thank you again for an entertaining and informative week. I had a great time and wanted to let you know\, the training and resources provided has made a difference in how I view and approach biorisk management. \nPPB Attendee\nABSA’s Principles and Practices of Biosafety® is the best comprehensive source of biosafety that I have encountered. It came highly recommended and it lived up to its name. The interactive exercises and the information that was provided to us will serve me as reference material for months and years to come. Thank you so much to the ABSA team for making this a great learning experience! \nPPB Attendee\nExcellent foundation course for the beginning biosafety professional\, welcoming to a wide mix of professional backgrounds. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to establish themselves in the field\, or working on implementing a biosafety risk management program at their institution. \nPPB Attendee\nSuch a wonderful course that will really help me as a new professional in the biosafety field. The interactive exercises were beneficial to apply the course knowledge to practice and experience what it’s like to work with others to make risk assessments and decisions. \nJUL 2021 PPB Attendee\nThis training was very valuable because it helped me see how much I already know\, learn in more detail about things that I knew but superficially. The fact that the modules were presented by very experienced professionals gave me a sense of great appreciation for the Biosafety and Biosecurity program and willing to participate and be more active in the program \nPPB Attendee\nI really enjoyed the course. I come from a limited background in biosafety and feel as though I walked out of the course with a much greater feel and understanding of those things I encounter in our biosafety laboratories. \nPPB Attendee\nThis was the best training course I have ever taken. Each instructor was great in how they could relay the material and bring their own perspectives to the course. I have never seen a group of instructors with that kind of chemistry together to build off each other through the week – this I also belive helpd the group itself mesh really well. The interactive exercises added a tone to the learning experience. They were challenging but also having a short time frame for most of them helped keep us at task while also creating a bit of a stress that we will see in the field. I also greatly appreciated the approachability of the instructors; having chances to interact outside of the class was great and helped break down the walls that can be present in trainings to be able to better approach each person during the week. I cannot give enough thanks to each instructor. \nFEB 2020 PPB Attendee

SUMMARY:2V. Tactical Implementation of Biosecurity Principles: An Advanced\, Scenario-Driven Course on Risk and Threat Management Programs
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 30 and Friday\, May 3\, 2024 from 11:00 – 3:30pm CDT \n2V. Tactical Implementation of Biosecurity Principles: An Advanced\, Scenario-Driven Course on Risk and Threat Management Programs\nRyan Burnette\, PhD\, Merrick & Company\, Greenwood Village\, CO\nLauren Richardson\, DVM\, MPH\, DACVPM\, Merrick & Company\, Greenwood Village\, CO\nChuck Tobin\, AT-RISK International\, Reston\, VA\nA distinguishing factor between security and biosecurity programs is the fact that biosecurity programs are focused on assets that are biological in nature. This brings forth unique distinctions in implementing risk- and threat-based approaches to prevent the release\, loss\, or theft of these assets. This advanced workshop will challenge attendees to fully analyze a single biosecurity driven scenario through a series of risk and threat management decision-making. Participants will learn the principles of biosecurity\, which set it apart from traditional security\, by applying tactical methodology to analysis of a real-world biosecurity case study. The outcomes of this intensive course will be identification of biosecurity-specific risk and threats\, their corresponding prioritization against a mitigation plan\, approaches for blending these inputs for comprehensive biorisk management\, and finally\, an integrated biosecurity plan. Participants will leave the course with tools that will be applicable to their host institutions for future engagements building effective integrated biosecurity plans against scenarios.\nObjectives:\n•	Describe stakeholder roles in biosecurity planning and assessment as part of a comprehensive biorisk management program\n•	Recognize\, assess\, and develop mitigations for risks\, threats\, and vulnerabilities to protect biological materials and other laboratory assets from unauthorized access\, loss\, theft\, misuse\, diversion\, or intentional release\n•	Develop strategies for prioritization and communication of needs associated with implementing an integrated biosecurity plan\nSuggested Background:	None\nTarget Audience:	All Biosafety and Biosecurity Professionals\nAudience Level: Advanced\nCourse Length:	8 hours (two 4-hour live sessions with a 30-minute break each session)
