Designed for participants with some prior experience in handling or shipping infectious substances who may not have been certified within the past three years\, the course is delivered through five 100-minute online sessions. Case studies will highlight some of the challenges for exposure prevention in each setting to show how LAI data can support your biosafety program. \nWe will look at the annual reports of two centralized national systems committed to transparent and consistent reporting on exposures\, seroconversions\, and laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) according to their regulatory framework. \n\nS. Federal Select Agent Program (2015-2024)\nCanadian LINC system (2016-2024)\n\nThe two programs differ in scope whereas the US system reports only on Select Agents and the Canadian system reports on all Risk Group 2-4 pathogens. However\, both programs provide important lessons on the successful administration of a biosafety program\, including the importance of follow up after every exposure incident to prevent re-occurrence. \nPubMed and Google Scholar yield international data on LAIs – literature surveys and specific studies of LAIs due to bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites in various settings. This includes the challenges of working with blood or urine samples that may contain a Risk Group 3 pathogen in a clinical laboratory\, and the “lessons learned” from research studies with E.coli H7:0157\, LCMV\, Vaccinia\, and Dengue. Zoonotic pathogens are also an important source of LAIs. For example\, there have been 3 recent Macathine Herpes virus LAIs (“monkey B” virus in press reports). Established procedures may suddenly become unacceptable\, interrupting research and frustrating laboratorians. Likewise\, a single unexpected adverse event can put an entire program at risk. Being prepared to deal with such changes and events is critical to maintaining a robust program. Anticipating future challenges can be even more advantageous\, elevating a program from good to great. A proactive approach can minimize the impact of new requirements and reduce duration and frequency of crises sparked by sudden\, unexpected requirements or events. This course will explore strategies for maintaining and improving an existing program\, including how to anticipate and respond to new requirements. The focus will be on U.S. select agent requirements\, although a small section on comparable requirements in the international community will be included. Strategies will be based on the instructors’ experience with their program with additional input solicited from class attendees during open discussions. Topics will include select agent program history; effective oversight; efficiently meeting ongoing requirements; reporting\, responding to\, and analyzing incidents; suitability program case studies; inactivation requirements\, including “failure” investigation; and inspection preparation and response. Institutional Infectious Substance Shipping Program Assessment and Development\nNovember 9 through November 13\, 2026\n12:30 pm – 2:10 pm CST \nOverview:\nThis course is tailored for individuals responsible for establishing and overseeing infectious substance shipping programs within their facilities. This webinar series aims to assist institutions in developing robust shipping programs tailored to their needs. Course elements include: training; written policies; written descriptions of program plans; transport and shipping specific SOPs; safety and security plans; emergency response plans; logistics and supplies; carrier selection and support; MOUs and authorizations; access control and personnel assurance. The instructor will provide a detailed and comprehensive shipping program assessment and implementation guidance document. Attendees will receive an introduction to this document and step-by-step guidance on its completion. By completing the assessment document\, attendees will conduct a thorough review to identify areas for improving existing shipping programs. This interactive\, instructor led\, web-based training will invite attendees to share examples of how these elements are addressed at their own institution. \nObjectives:\n\nEvaluate external and internal requirements or conditions that influence shipping policy and program components at a facility\, emphasizing the relevance of international regulations (ICAO TI)\, international standards (IATA DGR)\, and other guidance (CDC\, WHO\, CWA) for developing a robust shipping program\nRecognize the components of a shipping program and utilize provided tools and templates to assess current shipping program elements\, identifying opportunities for improvement\nCompare and contrast various approaches to setting up a shipping program (centralized\, decentralized\, hybrid)\, and gain an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each\n\nSuggested Background:\nIATA Infectious Substance Shipping Certification \nTarget Audience:\nExperienced Biosafety Professionals\, Infectious Substance Shipping Managers & Trainers\, EHS Program Managers & Directors\, Professionals who manage and train others in shipping programs \nAudience Level:\nAdvanced \nCourse Logistics:\nCourse is five 100-minute sessions. DESCRIPTION:November 15-19\, 2026\nVaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO)\nUniversity of Saskatchewan (USask)\nSaskatoon\, Saskatchewan\, Canada \nhttps://cabs-acsb.ca/highcontainment.aspx \nThe University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) and the Canadian Association for Biological Safety/L’Association Canadienne Pour la Sécurité Biologique (CABS-ACSB) and Merrick Canada ULC are pleased to co-present the International High Containment Operations and Maintenance Workshop. \nThis workshop addresses the increasing needs of facility operators\, maintenance and operations staff for training in relevant aspects of biocontainment facilities and fills a critical need within the operations and maintenance community. The focus of this workshop is operational-based\, not research based. \nThis four day course allows participants to gain hands-on experience in some of the special containment and facility support areas (CL3 and CL3-Ag) of the International Vaccine Centre (InterVac)\, Canada’s newest and largest CL3-Ag facility.   \nProposed workshop topics will include:  \n\nPhysical integrity verification of containment laboratories\nAssessing the performance of HVAC and HEPA filtration systems\nPerforming maintenance and operational functions on critical containment systems\nIntegrating operations and maintenance with the scientific program\nAssessing and verifying the performance of primary containment devices\nWaste treatment and solid waste systems\nEnergy centre operation\nElectrical systems and maintenance\nDecontamination procedures for animal containment spaces\n\nIn addition\, participants will be presented with an overview in biosafety and biosecurity\, as well as lessons learned in facility design and construction. \nAfter successful completion of this 4 day workshop\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe a HEPA filter\, how it works and how it is certified\nExplain the purpose of a BSC and how it works and identify the elements of BSC certification\nIdentify and describe different systems and roles found within the energy centre of a large facility\nList different methods of treating liquid effluent from a biocontainment laboratory and identify items that could be considered when selecting a treatment system for biological laboratory waste\nDefine purpose of room integrity in a containment laboratory and describe how it is tested and verified\nDescribe how to safely maintain the different electrical distribution systems in a containment facility\n\nThe uniqueness of this workshop is in its intensive\, participatory-based approach. Teams will work with different instructors each day to complete technical modules\, supplemented by plenary lectures and discussions.  \nAll aspects of the workshop will be conducted in English. It is important for safety reasons that all participants be comfortable working in this language. There are only 20 spaces available for this course. Operational Management\, Sustainability\, and Risk-Based Decision Making for High-Containment Laboratories\nNovember 19\, 2026\n11:00 am – 3:00 pm CST \nOverview:\nHigh-containment laboratories play a critical role in public health preparedness\, infectious disease research\, and diagnostic response. However\, constructing a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory is only the first step; ensuring it is safe\, sustainable\, and compliant in operation presents significant technical\, operational\, and organizational challenges. Many institutions struggle with maintaining complex containment systems\, implementing robust biosafety programs\, and sustaining competent personnel and operational procedures over time.This course provides a practical framework for the operation\, management\, and sustainability of BSL-3 laboratories. Attendees will explore the operational components required to maintain high-containment facilities\, including governance structures\, risk management systems\, operational procedures\, infrastructure and engineering controls\, preventive maintenance programs\, and emergency preparedness strategies. Emphasis will be placed on integrating engineering controls\, administrative controls\, and biosafety practices into a coherent biorisk management approach aligned with international guidance and best practices. The course also examines common institutional challenges encountered in high-containment laboratories\, including infrastructure failures\, gaps in operational planning\, insufficient maintenance strategies\, and misalignment between laboratory design and operational capabilities. Attendees will learn how to evaluate these risks and implement practical solutions to improve laboratory performance and safety. SUMMARY:BSL-3 Operations\, Maintenance\, and Verification Training
DESCRIPTION:This introductory course is a four-day training designed to certify personnel for safe entry into an operational BSL-3 laboratory. This course consists of a mixture of classroom and practical training that includes an introduction to microbiology\, biosafety\, risk assessment concept\, BSL-3 lab characteristics\, emergency management and personal protective equipment (PPE) use including procedures for donning and doffing PPE with N95 or various PAPR respirators. \nThis course is suitable for O&M personnel and other non-research staff who may need to enter BSL-3 facilities to perform maintenance or make repairs. The ANSI/ASSE Z9.14 Standard focuses on performance verification of engineering controls specifically related to the ventilation system features of BSL-3/ABSL-3 facilities. Z9.14 is the only guidance document that provides a methodology to verify ventilation systems in such facilities. The standard provides a risk-based approach to reaching containment goals appropriate to the risk of the agent and the laboratory activity. This course will provide a complete overview of the standard as well as provide practical hands-on training on how to assemble the team\, perform the test methodology\, and determine the suitability of example BSL-3/ABSL-3 facilities based on risk assessment. Held at our National BSL-3 Training Lab with full testing functionality and equipment\, this course is suitable for BSL-3 laboratory managers\, biosafety professionals\, facilities managers\, architects\, engineers and commissioning agents.
